These packages are Free Open Source projects. The advantage of OpenSource is cost and typically fast response to bugs and security patches. Outside developers often write many useful and free modules and add-ons to add features. Help typically provided by developers and experienced users via web Forums so solutions to problems can take a day or more to find if it is not a problem already reported and fixed. Disadvantage is lack of real-time support services.
Don't be afraid of OpenSource because it provides great product value at little to no expense to the end user. Similar products from main-stream vendors can cost thousands of dollars and are often NOT patched or updated as often. Outside modules seldom available to commercial products. Linux is a major OpenSource operating system which is being embraced by major corporations such as IBM and the world's largest corporation, WallMart. The NSA, CIA and major governments use Linux operating systems.
